I forget if I promised you a non-music game pick this week, but I decided to do one anyway. :P
What can I say about Street Fighter II that hasn't been already? The series is still going, with players trading blows in Super Street Fighter IV over PSN/XBOX Live! But one of my favorite tracks from the original SF2 has to be this song, Guile's stage BGM. Especially this remix, which I believe its first appearance was in Super Street Fighter II TURBO when it appeared on the 3DO and PC with an all-new remixed soundtrack.
Also, the song itself is so versatile, it goes with everything!
Please note due to copyright issues I can not make this song available for you to download directly.
Well, today May 21st marks the 30th anniversary of one of the greatest game franchises of them all, Pac-Man. And here on Orange Lounge Radio would like to pay tribute to Namco's oldest franchise and probably most popular game. There are a lot of Pac-Man games, some retain the original aspect of the original but give it new twists, like Pac-Man C.E. or the upcoming Battle Royale; but there are other games that take Pac-Man to whole new adventures, like the Pac-Man World series or Pac-Man Rally. Pac-Man has also appeared on many of Namco's other franchises, like Klonoa or Ridge Racer, which is the soundtrack featured today.
This song is pretty reminiscent of old-school Pac-Man. While the original arcade didn't feature a compeling soundtrack, pretty much everyone remembers the cut-scene music from the arcade games, which is what this song samples. Almost all Ridge Racer soundtracks in the series feature at least one song or reference to Pac-Man, which makes the Ridge Racer series even cooler than it is.
So today, go play some Pac-Man while listening to this song, I heard some site called Google has it's own version of the game on their main page, or go download Pac-Man C.E. on iPhone or XBLA, it's pretty good.

After our gaming weeks, we start in Part A with some lively discussion about the new EA sports pass, with plenty of comments from our chatters. Walmart apparently wants to sell used games again, and let those rumors begin about the release dates for Playstation Move and Project Natal. We are excited to hear a new Castlevania game is on the way, but maybe a little less excited when we find out it is a puzzle game for the iPhone. We have to talk about KIDZ BOP DANCE PARTY in part B, but do not worry, it is quick and painless. Far less painful than the Railroad Tycoon movie probably will be. Steam comes out for the mac and with it a FREE deal. It is pretty hard to beat free. All this and MORE including chatroom antics, mailbag, twitter topics and the classic game of the week on the show where EVERY gamer has a voice-- Orange Lounge Radio!
I'm back again with another installment of Retro Rearview! This week, I'm going back to the year 1994 to take a look at the Japan-only system, the PC-FX!
Released by NEC (Who's probably more well known for the PC-Engine, which came to the US as the TurboGrafx 16) the PC-FX was quite a beast, packing 32 bits under its hood. And speaking of its hood, it's interesting to note that this system was probably the only one of its time to stand vertically (unlike today's consoles, where two of the big three offiicially support a 'vertical' stance.) which certainly saved space, and since most Japanese homes were already pretty small anyway, the more saved space, the better!
As for the system's games, the PC-FX didn't really have any big name titles like the Super Famicom (SNES), MegaDrive (Genesis) or PC-Engine (TG-16). Probably the closest thing it had to 'big names' were several licensed anime-based games:
Ah! My Goddess
Battle Heat (Read about this one in DieHard GameFan, it was an FMV-based fighting game featuring several different anime-style characters.)
Cutey Honey FX
Der Langrisser FX
Galaxy Fraulein FX
Return to Zork
Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki FX
Unfortunately, the PC-FX lasted until 1998, so the system only saw around 60 games in its lifespan. Especially when you consider that it was going up against the 3DO, Saturn and the PSX, coupled with a lack of AAA titles (mostly dating sims and H-games) the PC-FX just couldn't keep up with the big boys.
I hope you enjoyed this week's Retro Rearview! Tune in next week for the last 'Classic Computer', and then get ready for a change of pace this June... Let's just say I'm changing things up a little bit in celebration of OLR's 8th anniversary! :3
