I Love That Song! - NOW WHO DAT IS? PDF Print E-mail

Due to legal reasons I can't make this song available for download.

I'd planned to take a break from the music game-related selections at least for a while, but after the show wrapped up on Sunday (tune in at 6 every night over at AllGames!) and before they pulled the plug, their last song was this sentimental favorite of the show's hosts and early listeners... thus I knew what my pick would be.

This song originally appeared in DDR SOLO BASS, before later appearing in the home release DDR Extra MIX on PSX. If I could use one word to describe this song, well... its 'bootylicious' .

Of course DDR SOLO 2000 was the highlight of our very first episode way back in 2002, and if you want to hear how that went down, don't forget to check out my 'blast from the past' highlight reel, OLR: Best Hits Volume 1!

Heck, it's OVERKILL!

Today's Track is Dim Sum For Papa (album mix) by Blissful Death
from The House of The Dead: Overkill

This song contains minimal but still offensive language

Please note due to copyright issues I can not make this song available for you to download directly.

The House of The Dead series are basically a rail shooter games where you kill zombies, and it's a pretty awesome series too made by SEGA. The series started in arcades, then ported to consoles. It also did some pretty popular spin-offs like Pinball of the Dead and Typing of the Dead. Though HofD ain't a series where you would find an outstanding soundtrack, but then Overkill appeared.

HotD: Overkill took the series and made it even better, it's so over the top, it's awesome altogether. And the soundtrack is truly worthy of talking about. The lyrics or voice-overs in this song demostrate how over the top tand intense his game is, even for a Wii game. But the music itself is so damn good, you could just listen it without any voice-overs and it would still be very good. This song itself pretty much represents most of the soundtrack, such good jazzy rhythm and beats, it could well fit into a Tarantino movie.

Thanks to my close friend, @Foxhack, for this song suggestion. Like him, if you have suggestions or recommendations for future "I love that song" segments or just wanna comment about the song please click the "Add new comment" link or contact us via Twitter: @olr, @Darktetsuya or me, @act_deft!

On this weeks episode of OLR, we talk about a glitch that could be a potential huge exploit for the XBOX Live Arcade.. and you won't believe what game enables it! How long until they patch that one? Well, a Red Steel 3 is rumored for the Wii, as is yet another dedicated band Guitar Hero game. Both of them do not sound quite as awesome as a new 2D Castlevania, however. AWESOME! Less awesome? Class action lawsuits over the PS3? Well... maybe this one is deserved. We will see what the chatters think about that... In Part B tonight-- LISTLESS! What Vs. Capcom game should they make next? Also big Bungie news, FFV & FFVI remake rumors, Red Faction movie news, Reflec Beat and yes... Super Strip Fighter. All this and MORE including chatroom antics, phone calls, e-mails, twitter topics, facebook messages, myspace... oh just kidding who uses myspace any more? All on the show where EVERY gamer has a voice-- Orange Lounge Radio!

Retro Rearview: FM-TOWNS Marty PDF Print E-mail

RR-FMT

*Formerly 'A Look Back'

I'm back again with a look at another classic console. Had to change the name of the article, but I'm hoping to stick with 'Retro Rearview' for the rest of these. (Hat tip to our lead-in act Bobby Blackwolf for the suggestion! tune into his show every night before ours at 5PM Pacfic every Sunday @ allgames.com!)

Anyway, the next system I wanted to take a look at was the FM-Towns Marty, a console version of an obscure Japanese computer that was released back in 1991 by Fujitsu. Also notable about this system is that it was the first 32-bit system ever released, predating the Saturn, PSX and 3D0 by three years.

The FM-Towns itself was more like a desktop PC, but the Marty was geared more toward the console gaming market. Most of the 'FM-Towns' games should also be compatible with the Marty, but your mileage may vary.

Speaking of games, the Marty did have a decent selection of great games, including several arcade ports:

  • After Burner
  • After Burner III (Which amazingly looks on par with Namco's 'Ace Combat/Air Combat' on the PSX)
  • Alone in the Dark
  • Bubble Bobble
  • Chase HQ
  • Drakkhen
  • Eye of the Beholder II (But oddly no sign of the original EotB)
  • Flashback: The Quest For Identity
  • Galaxy Force II
  • Image Fight
  • Kyukyoku Tiger
  • Loom (Man this game was everywhere!)
  • Marble Madness
  • Muscle Bomber (Known in the states as Saturday Night Slam Masters, a Capcom-themed wrestling/fighting game which also costarred Mike Haggar of Final Fight fame.)
  • New Zealand Story (Perhaps one of my favorite Taito games ever)
  • Operation Wolf
  • Puyo Puyo
  • Samurai Spirits (aka Samurai Shodown in the US)
  • Super Street Fighter II (from videos I've seen, a pretty amazing port!)

Sadly, despite Fujitsu's best efforts to compete with the Super Famicom (SNES) and Megadrive/Mega CD (Genesis/SEGA CD), the Marty just couldn't keep up with the big boys, which is disappointing... from the videos I've seen on youtube in researching this article, it certainly looked like a neat system to own.

Unfortunately as far as checking out the FM-Towns Marty, unlike the last installment where I covered the MSX, there isn't any word on a Wii Virtual Console appearance for the Marty. So, you'll have to try eBay, or use an emulator such as Xe which emulates many systems including the Marty. As for the games.... sadly you're on your own.

I hope you enjoyed my second installment of Retro Rearview. I'll try to keep this series going for at least a little while longer, with a few more classic/obscure systems to talk about. If you have an obscure system you'd like to see me spotlight on RR, hit me up on twitter @darktetsuya!
