OLR TG #51: Week of 12/19/05 - 12/25/05Video game sales down in 2005 but why and what does it mean... More Xbox 360 updates but some things on Revolution as well... Sega's Handheld future... Updates on the federal gaming law... Final Fantasy IV and Final Fantasy gushing in general... 8 Myths about video games debunked... Putting an XBOX360 in an Atari 2600 case... Mailbag, Advice Column and much more.
Honestly, this was one of my most favorite shows we've done recently, I don't know if it was the randomness in the air or what, hopefully you guys feel the same, let us know.
Show NotesThe Tiger handheld was called either Game.Com or Games.com. The immediate failure of the system was a black and white display.
Ecco The Dolphin on Dreamcast (and I think PS2) was an exceptional title. I played thru the EU version. There was only one thing I despised was when the controls were too loose to ever master. So I struggled. I think the Sega CD version of the original game was the best. For those seeking more Ecco-type action, Finny the Fish plays almost the same. Finny gets fairly hard quickly! And its cheaply had if you can find it. That Alabama case w/Judge Moore sounds like the same case that discarded the Flawyer (aka JT). Accepting that MS said the initial launch was 300K units of Xbox360, and that 300K more were released by Best Buy, where are the 600K units? I surmise (read: wild-assed guess) that these two figures overlap, because MS only knows how many were sold to the retailers. On the Video Game Myth thing, I can actually add expert opinion to military training. I actually deal with simulators a lot at work. They focus on skills, not on fun. Many are fun, though! Military games, including America's Army will cut realism for sake of gameplay. What was the last game that concerned backpack weight, water purification, casualty survival and retrieval, or maintenance? On the other hand, there are some skills honed in video games that translate to real world. Here are some examples: kill zones on models in FPS, light gun games (aiming), pool simulation (reflective angles are realstic), etc. Essentially, some videogames provide a launchpad of knowledge and skill to their real-world counterparts. I actually avoided an accident BECAUSE of GT3. The drift was so realistic in the game that when it happened in real life (brakes locked) I instinctively let go of the brake, straightened the car, and braked again. Video game sales. Do they include system sales? If not, each Xbox 360 took about $500 away from game sales, each gamecube and GBMicro took away $100. System launches rarely have super-duper titles. The drop in sales isn't surprising at all. I'm also going to take another wild guess, and assume that the iPod frenzy replaced some of the videogame sales (same target market). You guys are awesome for voluntarily doing a Christsmas show.
CRAP! I was gonna listen to the podcast today but my computer went funky over the weekend and some settings got jacked in itunes. Auto update of podcasts for some reason got unchecked(along with some corruption and other stuff). I'll have to listen tomorrow hopefully.
Robb - sounds like the Game.com you're talking of. The b&w screen wasn't the only reason it failed right away. It was a very crappy design and all the games really sucked. It was pure garbage through and through.
<_<
>_> <_< ... I own two Rez Trance Vibrators... Also, Jamie: http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dl ... category0=
Yep, that's the one! I also don't remember it having a backlight, that it had a lo-res screen, and it was sold as a toy. Okay, it was a toy. I never got as far as the games. With N-Gage, I did try the demo display, and I was very unimpressed by the games themselves, the display, and the controller. So it makes you wonder (about N-Gage and Game.com) if they even did playtests or market surveys. As for the game sales being down, I was listening to Gaming Steve who confirmed my suspiciouns. He said that the industry blames the Xbox360, causing people to squirrel away funds all summer, then not delivering, forcing many to just dump it onto some other large-budget item. So console sales are most definitely not included in the game sales figures. I'd also like to blame the PSP for releasing too many movies! You save up for a game, then it never comes out, so you settle for PSP movies?
I actually liked the N-Gage. I think Nokia would've done better with it marketing it more as a phone then a game system. It made a dandy phone for gamers, just not a great gaming device itself. I didn't think the games were that bad, and the series60 games are rather good as well(at least some were good). I don't blame the PSP for releasing too many movies, people keep buying them up. Of course they'll keep releasing them if people keep buying them. I say what a waste, you're better off ripping your own dvd's and putting them on a memory card. It takes time though, I got tired of doing that as well but at least I wasn't throwing away money to rebuy movies. Also, Dark Sakura, the Street Fighter where Sakura is playing the Wonder Swan was the Street Fighter Alpha Movie, not an OVA. Unless there is an OVA out there with the same scene, I've only seen the SFII and SFA movies for the SF series.
Dark Sakura - If you're looking for a Trance Vibrator, check out ebay. Last I looked, they went for cheap. You can even get the REZ import and vibrator combo for a good deal. They're not hard to find by any means.
I think that was my biggest complaint about the N-Gage... it was a pretty super phone... but I just didn't get their HUGE push into gaming... I think I would have just marketed the thing a little differently... more like a sidekick?
I actually don't like getting things on eBay.
And the Street Fighter Zero was originally an OAV. The movie was the one set in the SFII universe.
skie - I think a marketing more like the sidekick would've done them well. Instead they thought they had the next Gameboy on their hands and instead made themselves look like the next Game.com..heh.
DS - I'll be damned, didn't know about the SFA/0 OVAs. Thanks for the clear up. Even if you don't like using ebay, you still can't go wrong with some of the stuff there. Loads of good prices and all to be had if you search around a little bit. Unfortunately their import game prices usually aren't any better(and sometimes worse) then a reputable importer. But their computer accessories and other oddball stuff, you just can't beat their prices(as long as you know full well what you're getting, there's plenty of crap I don't touch there before a little research).
