This is an unusually momentous announcement -- a completely new Bemani series is on the horizon!
jubeat, undergoing location testing across Japan between Dec. 22 and Dec. 24, features what seems to be a 4x4 grid of square-shaped panels located at arm height, with speakers on either side and a large subwoofer on the bottom of the cabinet. Initial information seems to indicate that the panels themselves light up and are pressed accordingly.
The official site as it stands now is http://www.konami.jp/bemani/jubeat/. More information will be posted as details come forward about this mysterious new game!

I heard about that, did a little bit of research though I'm not quite sure what to make of the songlist yet. (As there were only a couple of english-language licenses and the rest were all in Japanese, so I don't know where exactly they came from, or if they're new.)
Though the grading/difficulty scale in the loke-test version reminds me of what they used in GF/dm (I assume they still do, the SS/S/A/B/C/D/E scale, and the difficulties are Basic/Normal/Extreme, iirc.) It sounds interesting, I will say that much. OLRmy since 6/23/2002!

A game about beating jews? That's ridiculous. Konami's done some bad things, but I draw the line at anti-semitism.
Happy holidays.
... wow, LOL. I'd expect that sort of off-color comment from LOKI, but damn lol OLRmy since 6/23/2002!

...........
Supposedly it's pronounced "You-beat." So, uh, beat yourself. :) Kidding aside, this looks like it falls squarely in the 'weird-ass techno aesthetic' that I love. I hope the game lives up to its art design, the last game I can think of that looked like that and felt accordingly was Frequency, which I loved. And I hope this gets a USA release. Harmonix can't be the only big-name beat-matching-game company around, much as I love them... let's get some variety in here!
On a similar note, I was watching some random vids of beatmania IIDX: IN THE ARMY NO-- DJ TROOPERS, and noticed a new mode, 'all-scratch'. This mode moves between 50-90% of the notes (depends on the song I think) over to the turntable. It especially looks like fun on doubles, I just wish Konami would release a US PS2 sequel with this mode in it, I'd totally buy another bundle just to be able to play it. OLRmy since 6/23/2002!

I'd help, but I'm into the whole 3d modeling thing... no code from me. I could provide art if the project needed it, but.. that's all I'm good for
Oh, and Jason, was that supposed to be a negative thing or a positive one?.. I looked at a video of someone playing Crackin DJ and it didn't seem too bad. Although it didn't bring any new mechanics to the table, it utilized them differently than anything I've seen before. Just like Portal... teleports have been around forever, just never utilized as the primary tool. (Other than Narbacular Drop... which... doesn't count...)
well if the game works anything like I think it does, I *might* be able to whip something up in The Games Factory... I'm even able to make .exe files, though you need a special config file to run em, I hear.

Crackin' DJ was really a true to form DJ simulator. And it was only sorta fun. It was overly simple because what you did was actually supposed to be a DJ. Scratching, crossfading, speed (bpm) matching, etc.
As opposed to IIDX which gives you some of the hardware, and a truck-load kick-you-in-the-face-and-drop-you-on-your-ass difficulty. Crackin' DJ didn't bring anything to the table, because DJ'ing already exists. It was mostly a negative thing.
Realism != fun
Imagine a version of Guitar Hero where you have to manage individual strings and more frets, Phoenix Wright with long drawn-out trials and no disruptive/loud behavior allowed, or Mario Kart with Gran Turismo-esque physics.
