When I heard your hypothetical "Release PS3 this year or delay launch" question, I compared it to other industries:

architecture: delay or building may collapse.

medicine: delay or we may find nasty side-effects. Oddly enough, drugs have been released without knowing about heart attacks and liver damage.

car: delay or maybe the wheels fall off and the car explodes.

Those are called catastrophic failures. Systems catching on fire and/or scratching disks are fairly unforgivable.

They need to delay. In that time, they need to:

1) Freeze the design and manufacture development kits.
2) Bring the price down and have just one model.
3) Test that bugger.
4) Support 1080i unconditionally because that will be common within its lifecycle.

I'd rather have a game system than a doorstop.
