Another comment about the Wiimote/Wiimote*OLR staffcome pls*

I sent an email to OLR, and I was saying the differences in the PS3 controller and the wiimote, or the wiicon as I think Jamie called it. And then Jamie corrected me by saying the Wii controller uses IR. And she said that it can't decide where it is in 3D space. Well, I have sources that say otherwise.

First of all, I don't really know much about IR, but I think that is what TV remotes use, right? But anyway, I may be wrong with this.

Ok, on nintendo.com's article about the Wii's hardware, which is in this link: http://wii.nintendo.com/hardware.html , it says:

"Up to four Wii Remotes can be connected at once using wireless Bluetooth technology. The wireless signal can be detected within 10 meters of the console. Both the Wii Remote and the Nunchuck controllers include a three-axis motion sensor."

And here is a quote from Jamie that is from an email I sent her, "but even after having
played Zelda on Wii, I can tell you there was no sense of 3D space with the Wii controller."

Well, just because one game, Twilight Princess, (which is a port of a Gamecube game) doesn't use the 3D space technology doesn't mean the Wii can't tell where it is in 3D space. I think a better example of this is Wii Sports tennis. It can tell if you are doing a backhand or a lob (I don't know much about tennis, but whatever a hit that is ahead of you), so it has to tell if it going farther back or farther ahead.

And also, nowhere on the Nintendo site does it say anything about the Wii using IR.

I really don't think it uses IR.

Thoughts on my research and results?

I'll jump in here, since I'm the one that said it was just IR.

The bluetooth is just to transmit the data from the controller to the Wii in terms of input.

The way that Wii Baseball and Tennis work is that the characters on the screen swing when the sensor underneath the TV (which is just 4 IR receivers in a row, you can even see the divisions if you look closely) detects the IR of the remote. The accellerometers inside the Wii remotes determine which direction the remote is going at the time, so it can tell between forehand and backhand in the case of Tennis. For baseball, it just swings when the IR hits the TV sensors.

This information was relayed to me directly by a Nintendo employee on the E3 show floor.

I can tell you with complete confidence that the Wii remote can NOT tell you the exact x,y,z coordinates in 3D space of the controller. They trick you into thinking that it can with clever programming, but that's really what ALL video games do - trick you that it's doing something that it's not with clever programming. Especially if it doesn't use the IR, such as Monkey Ball. I successfully played Monkey Ball with the Wii remote behind my back, pointing to my left. It had no clue that it wasn't facing toward the screen.

Both you and Jamie stated the same thing, so I guess I am wrong.

Thanks for clearing it up!

Lol. I did believe you, I just wanted a bit more feedback on this.

Two voices are better than one.

By making this thread I wasn't implying that I didn't believe you, because you sounded like you know what you are talking about, and you had a reliable source.

That really isn't worth bumping a 90-DAY old thread for.
