Split Show - Why?

Postby sithspawn » Fri Jan 20, 2006 8:10 am

I've been a regular listener of your podcast for a while. I dig the show and I'm cool with the combining of the live and podcast shows.

What I don't like is the part A, part B thing. I use iTunes to get the show and it's a bummer to listen to just half a show. Why not make both parts available Monday or just combine them in to one file? Granted, it's cool getting "double" the OLR, but if I listen to your cast Monday morning on the way to work, it's hard picking it up again on Wed.

Is there a reason you decided to split the podcast?

I know one of the reasons was to spread out the bandwidth to this site.

Understandable...

http://www.archive.org offers free hosting for audio.

Might be worth looking at.

Yes, bandwith is a big part of it, but we're still experimenting with it. We may push part B back to Tuesday, I can totally see where you are frustrated with having to jump "back" into it... at least this way it could be one day to another.

Also, an hour seems to be the "standard" time for podcasts, I hear a lot of complaints about podcasts that tend to run longer. I really have no rationalization as to why this is as iPods let you pause and pick up right at the same place whenever, but this sort of "standard" was another contributing factor...

Thanks for the feedback

Monday and Tuesday might work better. As for the length, I usually listen on the way to work. I'm only about 35min away so I have to pause the show anyway.

I'd have no problem with a 2hr podcast...but that's just my opinion.

I didnt end up really getting the chance to listen to part B until today... so it doesnt really matter to me... but i just feel weird commenting on stuff that you said what... like a week ago? ugh... i dunno its a good idea splitting it up though instead of having a 2 hour podcast because honestly... i dont like to pause it halfway through... (even though I do anyways) because for my job i just load up a truck and drive it... then unload it and drive it back (bout a half hour each way) so really the hour deal works great for me... 2 hours wouldnt be so great...

iTunes does this, not the iPod. If you stopped in the middle of a song/whatever on an iPod and let it sleep, of course it'll go back to where it left off. But if you choose another song/thing on your iPod and go back to the previously played file, it starts over.

not podcasts though, they work like that on the ipod and itunes, and they even talk to each other to let them know where you left off. it's pretty neat.

Really? O_o My iPod doesn't do that. Maybe it's because it's an old model or something. My iTunes doesn't do that either. Wierd. =/

have you updated the firmware? i bought mine over a year ago so it's no color, no video, just a lil white B&W ipod that gets the job done.

skie is right, your iPod should remember where you were in the podcast and start back up.

First thing, grab the new version of iTunes.

To update the firmware on your iPod grab the iPod Updater.

http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/

Once it's installed you can either restore or update your iPod. Be sure to read the instructions and remember that restoring your iPod erases everything so make sure you have a backup of your music. I'm fairly certain that if you just want to update the firmware you do not need to restore.

Weiiiiiiird. I never heard of that function.

I keep seeing that there's an iPod update omg constantly but it's always something for newer iPods, never old ones. And even when I run them, it says my iPod is already up to date.

I don't like the split podcast, so I switched to live365. Glad I did because I really enjoy the Rob Roberts Show now as well.
