ESRB Best of Biased

Postby robbway » Thu Feb 01, 2007 1:23 pm

What Dark Sakura said about the private ratings being better is correct. Since the game industry pays for the ESRB, the ESRB has to do the best job possible in order to sell the most games. At first, that seems bad. Then, you realize if they rate the games wrong, it will hurt sales and thereby force the game companies to disband the ESRB in favor of a new ratings board.

A fringe benefit of this is that the ESRB can tailor their recommended changes to the intended audience. A government ratings board has no interest in selling games and will not make the best decisions for the game publishers. This would force the publishers to continue to use the ESRB and bring in the legal muscles for $$$$ in lost sales when the government disagrees with the private ratings.

It's a lot like passing unconstitutional violent game bans, think of how much it will cost the taxpayers.
