2009 Predictions

Come chat about the console games that you are playing!

Postby katamaris4ever » Fri Jan 09, 2009 7:50 pm

Sorry I haven't posted in a while. Hope to get back to the OLR family.

-Into the Groove 3 is finally considered... Then cancelled again.
-Sims 3 will be the next Spore, as in, too hyped.
-Street Fighter IV will be forgotten. I mean, who really cares about Soul Calibur IV anymore?
-An indie company releases a mindblowing game on a downloadable service (2008's World of goo comes to mind...)
-Konami will release another DDR rather than get a new IP.
-Sony has three killer apps this year, all sequels.
-The Wiimotion plus is successful, due to the fact that all games released after the peripheral's launch will need it.
-Windows 7 will probably suck, but not as much as Vista.
-Uwe Boll will still make (very bad) video game adaptations.
-We get some sort of IIDX game from Konami.
-Space Channel 5 sequel!
Waiting for the day DDR X gets released...

The Playstation 3 still won't come within 10% of the 360 in terms of market share. (Since we all know it won't come anywhere close to the Wii's market share.)

The Wii will exceed 50% of the market share during some reported period of this year. I don't know that it will sustain that share at the end of the year, but it will happen at least once.

Microsoft will start dropping teasers for their next console, likely to release in 2010.

...that's all I can think of for now.

LORD VOLDEMORT will rise again and gather more attention

An overrated "mainstream" game will come out, and I will hate it because of its popularity. (I think I already won there with Halo: ODST)

I will get banned from #orangelounge at least once

At least over 5 LittleBigPlanet add-on packs will be released

Maple Story or PangYa (North American Servers) will eventually close down due to people not playing anymore. Albatross 18 is closing!

A new Crysis game will come out and will only have small changes again and be worth $30. (Crysis Warhead came in 2008, so World In Crysis might be 2009)

Valve will release a major patch to Left 4 Dead to include new campaigns. The survivor DLC pack will be released this year

Valve will release at least 3 more "class specific" patches to Team Fortress 2. (Possibly: Scout, Demoman, Sniper)

OLR will turn 7 years old and will be a bit more mature (though not by much).

New graphics hardware will be developed, making today's AlienWare PCs outdated.

Bethesda will announce a new Fallout game.

Jonathan Blow will announce the concept to his new game (since he does not plan on making a 2nd Braid)

Any bolded sections mean that the prediction was confirmed.

Late to the Party

Postby robbway » Tue Feb 10, 2009 10:05 am

Yes, I'm a little late on my own posting. So I'll do a couple and get outta here.

1) No new consoles or handhelds will be announced this year. DSi? Why release that when the DS is so popular? At this point, it would be money down the drain to announce a next gen console, too.

2) Guitar Hero On Tour will get a new peripheral input device in anticipation of the missing GBA slot. It could be done if you use a button as "strum" and do the math on a single-touchscreen device.

3) Movie-based games will finally start to underperform as more people Try The F***NG DEMO (TTFD). This is wishful, but if movie games were no longer profitable, maybe they'd focus more on quality games.

Edit: Feb 11, 2009

4) A joypad peripheral compatible with the sync cable port will be made available for the iphone. It will suck and won't be compatible with the standard applications for the iphone.

Okay, I'm done.

The only way to make a peripheral that wouldn't suck with the iPhone is to attach an iPhone to the iPhone.

And... yeah.

Hobbyists will make it for their jailbroken instance, but this isn't going to happen in the Apple Store itself. You know, the mainstream world and what not.

My first prediction just got shot down today with a street date for the DSi of April 5. If people are truly cash savvy now, the sales of the Wii should suffer for DSi sales, or vice versa. I think we may discover Nintendo is recession-proof in 2009. That's not a prediction, though

Since Robbway hasn't graded anything im going to start grading everyones predictions... I will be doing this harshly and points will be given accordingly... Each point can only get 1 credit... If there are multiple points are in a point then it will be part of the overall point, partial points will be given in instances where part of it comes true...

gs68:

- Konami loses their lawsuit against Pentavision, because Konami's yet to put out a portable Beatmania/IIDX/Pop'n that doesn't suck. Thus, DJ MAX lives on.
Case is still in the courts. But DJ Max is still around and is coming to the PSN: 1/2 credit

-- If it does, DJ MAX Fever becomes successful and the DJ MAX series starts to rival Guitar Hero and Rock band in popularity.
Its successful enough to be brought to the PSN but isn't really rivaling GH or RB: 1/2 credit

- Guitar Hero AC succeeds. Mass lynchings of Bemani fans ensues.
0 credit

- Radiant Silvergun gets shot down by the 2D-hatin' asspipers at Microsoft, who finally decide to delete and block rail shooters and scrolling shooters forever. Nintendo gives refuge to RSG via WiiWare. (To those awaiting its release: be praying, be praying, be praying.)
RSG is still being rumored to come to XBL, MS intends to release other shmups and Nintendo hasn't picked up RSG: 0 credit

-- Regardless, people continue to hate on WiiWare and VC, calling every last title on it overpriced shovelware garbage. WiiWare's games are getting high praise (Bit Trip series and Monkey Island) and VC is adding more consoles: 0 credits

- Earthbound NEVER comes to VC. And for that matter, Mother 3 never gets a US release...but Nintendo puts out an open letter to fans explaining why. Said fans do not grasp the true form of the letter, and continue to riot.
It hasn't come to VC and there are no signs it will: 1 credit

- Konami puts out some sort of action or RPG game featuring Pop'n Music characters.
0 credit

-- If it does, A. Michel (the guy in my avatar as of this writing) dies in it. =(
0 credit

- The DSi pulls a 64DD and doesn't get a North American release.
Nope its here: 0 credit

- Return of Guys On A Show. The first new episode is a drunken orgy, slash The Fuck Show, slash has special guests DMN and Travis.
0 credit

- Blackwolf and the ferret make amends and cease their rivalry.
The ferret has gone missing and Bobby is a prime suspect: 0 credit

- Jack Voldemort stages a real-life siege on Take Two and Rockstar's HQ. It fails and he's thrown in jail.
Not yet: 0 credit

- Brawl dies out. Everyone who plays Brawl gets labeled a "tourneyfag" and is banned from various Smash communities. Then the Supreme Court rules 7-0 that Brawl should be banned. (The 2 judges that say no get kicked out.)
Too opinionated and silly: 0 credit

- Gradius ReBirth's predicted GameSpot score: 1.5 (way too short, same shit from 1985 apparently). Sin and Punishment 2's score: 3.0 (outdated gameplay, it's not 40 hours long, it's a fucking rail shooter and not an FPS) No sign of a GS review and Sin and Punishment 2 is not out yet: 0 credit

- Arika attempts to make a new Tetris TGM. The Tetris Company sues. Arika says "fuck you," wins the lawsuit, and makes it.
1 Credit

- The new comparison joke on OLR is "better than La-Mulana" instead of "better than Crysis."
0 credit

- Speaking of which, Crysis takes #1 in the OLRMM.
thank god no: 0 credit

3 out of 16 credits

- Rez 2 gets announced for the Wii, along with a Rez 1 port also for the Wii.
sadly no: 0 credit

No formal announcement yet (only hints): 0 credit

- Sonic and the Black Knight will get stellar reviews and it will become a must have for Sonic fans and Wii owners alike.
Lol: 0 credit

- GT5 (Gran Turismo) will be delayed once again.
Yes till 2010: 1 credit

- PS3 and Wii will have a price drop.
double yes: 1 credit

- Darkstalkers will make it to either PSN or XBLA
Edit* PSN has Darkstalkers PSP game: 1 credit

- Wii storage problem will still won't fixed completely, and will have to be forced to enable external HDD support We have SD card support now: 0 credit

- Konami will bring either Dance Maniax or PPP to the Wii
Nope: 0 credit

Final result: 4 out of 15

ssj100matt:

- Sony will announce a price cut by E3 for the PS3, it will be a $50-$100 price drop and they will keep the 80gig bundle as their base SKU
There was a price drop before E3 and they also dropped the 80gig models: 1/4 credit

- The Wii will NOT have a price drop, but will promise to increase its production of the console
No price drop and production is about the same and there are plenty of consoles in the market: 0 credit

- In a move to bring back its core gamers; Nintendo will announce a few monster titles: A new Zelda game, a new Excite Truck and a new title from Shiggy Miyamoto...
2 new Zelda games were announced (new Wii and DS game), ExciteBots and Miyamoto brought us New SMB Wii; 1 credit

- Nintendo will come out with a Time Crisis collection game for the Wii that will utilize the Wii Balance Board... No but still a really cool fucking idea: 0 credit

- Nintendo will announce an Earthbound/Mother trilogy pack for the US... It will also come out that HAL Labs is working on the next Mother game...
Once again no: 0 credit

- Microsoft will come out with a Blu-Ray player attachment for the 360 and it will be $100

Lol no: 0 credit

- Microsoft/Rare will announce a new Killer Instincts game and that it will be an Xbox360 exclusive...
Hinted to coming to XBLA but nothing formal: 0 credit

- MGS4 will NOT come to the Xbox 360 this year
Nor will it ever: 1 credit

- A new Rock Band title will be announced this year (but won't come out till 2010)

- OLRevolution 2nd mix will come out
Hells yeah thanks to me: 1 credit

Sports championships:

- The Lakers will win the NBA Finals over the Boston Celtics
The Lakers won but not vs the Celtics: 1/2 credit

- The NY Giants will win the Superbowl over the Steelers
Steelers did win it: 0 credit

- Brett Favre will retire
He retired and then unretired: 1 credit

- The NY Rangers will win the Stanley Cup over the Colorado Avalanche... This will result in VxJasonxV to banning me :P
Rangers didn't win and the Avs didn't get close and Jason hasn't banned me, yet: 0 credit

Final results: 8 3/4 out of 19 credits

Skie:

Microsoft:

* Will again this year only give us one major console update in the fall, as they will claim the NXE can meet the needs of adding content as needed, and it will for the most part. They'll throw a bone at us once every few months with some neat new channel or frilly thing we play for a day and then forget about. The major console update will somehow address the Community Games which will have grown out of control by this point in the year, making it impossible to find quality games. It will give our avatars "rooms" or some other type of Home-inspired additions.
Almost dead on. We got the Facebook, Twitter and LastFM channels. Community games get a rating feature but its still hard to find the quality games. Avatars get additional Add-ons but no homes, yet: 3/4 credit

* Microsofts Littlebigplanet ripo.... i mean "inspired" game will be a focus at this years E3.
0 Credit

* Hardcore gamers will be disappointed with Microsoft this year because there won't be a lot of the "Hardcore" titles showing up. Sure there will be a few big ones that will appease the majority, but this year Microsoft is going to go for the jugular in the "family" games market.
Microsoft sort of did both this year. They cranked out new titles like ODST and Shadow Complex. And Natal will be aimed at the family market: 1 credit

Sony:

* Won't stop trying with PS3. I agree there will be a price drop. There will also be a major management shakeup and I think you'll hear a lot less talk at the various expos this year about how the PS3 is an "entertainment console"... expect to see a lot more focus on Blu-Ray live and the social components of the console i.e. Home. as well as the synchriocity between PSP & PS3
Price drop, check. Several more management people at Sony left. PS3 is still an entertainment machine with the addition of Netflix. Nothing really new with BR-L. And additional synching with the PSP-GO: 1 credit

* Will highlight at E3 this year another "Web 3.0" game that relies heavily on user created content just like Singstore, just like littlebigplanet, but something kind of new. I think also we'll see our first true Sony MMO finally show up this year, and Sony will have some limited success with games that you'd usually play on your PC but... on... your... console? No, really.
*Edit: Modnation racers counts. Sony gave us FF14 and DragonAge is just as popular as the PC version: 1 credit

Nintendo:

* Realizing that E3 is open to the masses again, Nintendo will basically suck MASSIVE fanboy cock at this year's E3 to try and win them back and deliver at least 3 titles we've "all been waiting for". Reggie will somehow make a joke about how they ignored us all last E3. Some type of new Zelda, a new F-Zero which indeed is what the Excite Truck team has been working on, and I think I'm going to go with the above people that predict that Mother will somehow FINALLY return to the US. The internet has an instant orgasm but the game turns out to be not that great. Colored Wii's FINALLY come out. I'm going to go out on a limb and say something extra crazy and say with this Wii redesign will come 720p outputs, which will make us all orgasm on paper because it's "Wii HD", but in execution it doesn't turn out to be that great because the hardware doesn't get much of an upgrade.
My fanboy cock isn't wet but they did give us New SMB Wii, New Golden Sun and New Metroid game from Team Ninja. New Zelda games were announced but sadly no new F-zero or Mother game. Colored Wii's are only in Japan for now. No new upgraded Wii: 3/4 credit

* Meanwhile it's a 3rd party developer who will steal the show on the Wii this year and come out with some awesome game that becomes the years must have title, even moreso than anything on Sony or Microsoft's system.
The New Metroid game by Team Ninja counts a little bit: 1/2 credit

Apple:

* Continues to see large successes in iPhone apps. Some type of expansion will allow these things to be played on your PC or on your television even, but it's met with tepid success.
Although Apps are still a success but no plans to expanded use: 0 credit

* I'm going to go out on a huge limb here and say that a future version of iTunes will challenge Steam in selling PC games (Mac games on a Mac naturally) directly through the store. Maybe even something where you can "carry the game with you" and when you plug your phone into a computer, it opens up the game for play on the computer. Fanboys declare Steam dead in the water, but iTunes ends up making most of their $ off popcap style casual titles, and Steam remains big with the "hardcore" PC crowd.
Hasn't happened yet but i think that might be coming soon: 0 credit

General:

* Final Fantasy XIII October 2009 Japan, November 2009 US
Came to Japan in Dec, 09 coming to the US in March 2010: 0 credit

* Rock Band 3 & New Guitar Hero game... but sales decline. One of the games finally introduces a new instrument. I'll even say it's the keyboard we've all been waiting for. How they fit all that shit on the screen..... no idea. That's what the sales decline gets blamed on, but in reailty people are just getting tired of it.
No RB3 persay but we get Lego RB and Beatles RB. Multiple GH games. No sales decline despite a deluted market. No new instruments: 1/2 credit

* Konami sues over DJ Hero. Fanboys go ballistic because the game isn't half bad, but doesn't see the success of Guitar Hero. It's no beatmania, either which will put off some of your purists.
No lawsuit from Konami but the game is pretty good and it doesn't really meet the same success as GH: 1/2 credit

* Okay, chalk this one up to wishful thinking but... I'm going to go for it....: Noticing what is being cooked up with DJ Hero, Konami re-introduces beatmania on the PS3/XB360 at E3 to justify their lawsuit. It's not directly tied to IIDX, but looks very similar. Fanboys collectively faint because Konami appears to get it right. Online play is there. They mix in old classic IIDX songs with newer "hits" though the "hits" are mostly crappy covers but all is
forgiven because it's beatmania on the PS3/XB360.
Wishful thinking indeed but sadly no new Beatmania on the major consoles: 0 credit

Final results: 6 out of 13 credits

WarriorBob

- Activision publishes DJ Hero, and follows up with surprise hits Keyboard Hero, Mariachi Hero, and Mandolin Hero. Having successfully flooded the market with the name, Activision releases Rock Band Hero in December, cleverly stealing Harmonix's market out from under them by confusing parents at Christmastime.
No and thank god: 0 credit

- Portal 2 released out of nowhere. Like, out of a wall or something.
Not yet: 0 credit

- Harmonix announces multi-instrument music game "Rock Band: ABBA" which features a tambourine peripheral. During long sections where there is no tambourine, the tambourine player may optionally sing.
No "Dancing Queen" RB yet: 0 credit

- Seeing the success of retro revivals such as Bionic Commando, Mega Man, and Street Fighter, Philips decides to re-release Zelda: the Wand of Gamelon with updated graphics and sound. It receives terrible reviews and doesn't sell. Philips doesn't know what the fuck.
No and thank god: 0 credit

- New Wii channel announced: Playstation Home. Turns out to just be a prank to mess with Microsoft.
0 credit

- Nintendo announces a new game for the Zelda, F-Zero, and Excite Truck franchises simultaneously. Unfortunately, it's the same game for all three series. "Exciting Zelda F-Truck" becomes the first Nintendo game to score an AO rating.
lol no: 0 credit

- Preorders of Portal 2 are promised free cake. In actuality preorders are not given cake.
No but seriously why not?: 0 credit

- Capcom announces "Capcom Vs. Geography," a new edutainment title. Top tier characters are Chun-Li, Ryu, and Florida.
Lol: 0 credit

- Xbox Live Community Games becomes the next major hub for porn. Xbox Live sees a rise in subscriptions, Xbox Live users see rises elsewhere.
One can only hope: 0 credit

Final results: 0 out of 9 credits

People seem to like it far more than Vista: 0 credit

He actually didn't release ANY Video game base movies this year (Far Cry was 08): 0 credit

-Space Channel 5 sequel!
Nope: 0 credit

The Playstation 3 still won't come within 10% of the 360 in terms of market share. (Since we all know it won't

Well done! Much appreciated. I had some password issues. I've got a slightly different idea for 2010 predictions. I may add snarky comments! Stay tuned.

RSG is still being rumored to come to XBL, MS intends to release other shmups and Nintendo hasn't
picked up RSG: 0 credit

Rail shooters are very much alive and well! Deadspace Extraction, for one. Fun fact: Toy Story: Midway Mania (the ride) is literally a rail shooter.

My money is on Clicky-the-Pen.

Wait, I thought the PSP game was available on PSN?

I second that! All games with duck-and-cover would benefit. Plus, two sides to the board, two players. I want that to happen!

What's a Soul Calibutt IV? j/k :)
I hear the Super SFIV game will be subtitled "You thought Seth was cheap before!?"

Agreed on "He-who-shall-not-be-gamed"

J-Blo has only hinted, but he admits he trashes his own ideas regularly.

Who is this robbway fool? There were several articles in December on how movie games still sell, so I'd say this robbway guy earns a total goosegg.
