Wii points: a waste of packaging

Postby theafroguy » Tue Dec 12, 2006 1:38 pm

I finally got my Wii yesterday, and decided to splash out on some virtual console games. So I went to HMV to buy a 2000-point card.

The packaging on the shelf was a DVD case, but I assumed that was just for display. Strangely enough, I was not handed a card, but the DVD box in its entirety. It was covered in a plastic wrapper and inside was a paper disc and several booklets. There was also a flimsy paper card with the code on.

As much as I love my Wii, I can't help but think what a waste of resources this is. All I want is a few numbers, why not just give me an envelope or something?

I wonder if that's a UK thing? Here in the states it really is just a little card similar to that of a calling card or I suppose credit card with a little cardboard flap glued to it to keep it on the rack. At least, that's how I've seen it.

Here in Canada, they are in little blister packages about 2 1/2 times the height of the card.

Mmm, sounds like they only used the DVD packaging in the UK then. Odd.

I have another gripe, though: the controls on Donkey Kong Country are all messed up! B is jump, A is switch characters, and Y is roll / pick up barrels - which makes perfect sense on a Classic controller, but on a GC one it makes jumping while holding barrels a nightmare! Even worse, since it only uses three buttons, it would work fine on a Wiimote.

Not quite as bad as wasteful amounts of packaging, mind you.
