No E-Penis Score for the PS3

Postby ssj100matt » Tue Oct 24, 2006 3:33 am

This story come from joystiq.com

Speaking with Game|Life, SCEA's executive vp Jack Tretton confirmed that PlayStation 3 user accounts will not feature an aggregate score based on gaming accomplishments, squashing rumors that Sony would counter Microsoft's gamerscore/achievement system with "entitlements."

Tretton did suggest plans to incorporate a "pan-console" scoring system into first-party titles, but admitted that Sony had not decided on a name for this feature and that developers of first-party launch titles would likely pass on it. While excluded from Sony's aforementioned scoring system, third-party publishers will have the option to include their own achievement-like rewards, "on a game-by-game basis."

Im not too heart broken over this... Ive never played the 360 so idk how important the gamerscore or achievement is to people so i cant judge... I just know some people are fanatical about those points *cough* Loki *cough* :P ...

Either way this new system the SCEA is talking about sounds just like "EA Sports Points"(i think thats what it was called) that EA had 3 years ago... Back then it was pretty lame so i dont expect much...

Well, seeing as though some people buy games just for the achievement points, I think it's purely to Sony's disadvantage. But if they had implemented some sort of Achievement Point system, they would have been accused of ripping off Microsoft. C'est la vie.

I play my 360 a lot, and I have to admit it's pretty fun working towards the achievements and getting points.

It's not the main reason I play the games, since the points aren't worth anything other than e-peen, but it is kind of fun to know that at all times I'm working towards getting something.

For example, just driving around in Test Drive is pretty fun in and of itself. Of course, every mile I drive gets noted down in my account and I can get achievements from them, which shows up in my online profile. It's kinda fun to see that and know that most of what I do contributes to something.

Also, it's a neat incentive to do well - that and leaderboards. I just about doubled my Geometry Wars highscore this morning and not only did I rise up in my friends board, but I got a score achievement in Geometry Wars and the fact that it was permanently recorded in that way made me happy.

But in the end it's just a nice feature and I don't think a lack of it will really bother anybody.

I don't think that anyone will miss them, but they definitely make me buy and play more games. It's like leveling up in an RPG, without the cool skills and stuff.

If/when I end up getting a PS3 this just confirms that the 360 will remain my system of choice for multi-platform games
