Reject False Icons

Postby DarkSakura » Thu Apr 07, 2005 3:40 pm

As many of you know, our resident Internet Celebrity (me) has been very much into Gorillaz fandom. They host a site called REJECT FALSE ICONS. The philosophy behind this is that popular culture has become a watered-down mockery full of cookie-cutter easy-sell manufactured icons. Shows like American Idol give us a very strong dose of this (though I admit there's been good talent to go through. We're being bombarded by the Justin Timerlakes and Britney Spears clones.

So, what do you consider a false icon to be? Any names? Any products? What out there do you think is discouraging people from thinking for themselves?

Hollywood, too.

I'm going to repost a quote from Russel of Gorillaz:

"The video's theme is also an extendion of Reject False Icons pattern that had run through the whole album. We live in a society that pays respect to inane characters. The cult of celebrity means that people with the most limited talent become priveleged members of our society."

In practice, they are not.

Does the fact that you consider foxnews or 700 club a false idol really matter in an era of 400 + cable channels? If anything we have too many choices.

A person with esoteric tastes could not live in a better era. If anything, reject false people!

I'd say people will just look up to about anybody in a state of fame. Whether it be American Idol or whatever else, they like to associate themselves with it somehow, maybe in an attempt to bring importance to their own life.

700 CLub is influential to the geriatric generation (which is the biggest voter bloc) like MTv is influential to ... teens? oh i dunno does anyone still watch MTv? I wouldn't know cuz I'm in between.
So they're not just any channel like, say Home Shopping Network. I mean, Pat Robertson ran for President for Christs sake! (ba-dum bump)
So yeah, Britney and American Idol and all the glitzy icons all all flash and dazzle and empty headed glamour that amaze the eyes of the simple-minded or those that want to numb their tortured psyches.
But there are other icons that manipulate the public's perception in life-and-death issues like whether we should be in Iraq, assassinating foreign presidents, etc.
Maybe the first type of icon distracts from the issues, the second type tells you what to think about the issues.
In theory, theory and practice are the same.
In practice, they are not.

I was once reading this magazine I got in the mail, I saw a picture of Hillary Duff, went online and slapped a big beautiful "REJECT FALSE ICONS" sticker on her face. I'm thinking about giving this issue of the magazine to my friend because she LOVES Hillary Duff. HAHAHA

That would be cruel. I don't want anyone to encourage doing something purposefully hurtful like you just did.

Not cruel, DS. Just a joke. I personally find Hillary Duff annoying and over rated, that's why I put the sticker on. My goal by giving others the magazine is to show that Hillary is overrated.

EDIT: Nice signature image.

That is all

People will realise that she's overrated anyway, but what if you liked a band and someone who you trust to respect your likes and dislikes did something rude like that about a band you like? That's not promoting the whole RFI; that's called being insulting and immature.

And BTW, thanks.

To tell the truth, I'm not much of a Gorillaz fan myself, just not my thing. I've tried listening to their music and just don't like it. But I have some odd crap in my collection too.
