For those of us who do not have The Orange Box or have not downloaded Portal, Valve is offering a Demo of Portal for free on Steam.

You must have NVIDIA Hardware for this offer.

I just started downloading this and it gives you Demos of

Half-Life 2: Deathmatch
Half-Life 2: Lost Coast
Peggle Extreme
Portal (a.k.a Portal: First Slice)

First Slice is too short T_T. Oh well. Peggle is actually really fun even though I'm not into casual games. Now I just need my f'ing debit card >.<

It's kind of a shame. At least Half-Life (yes, HL1) had different demo content. It was called the Half-Life: Uplink Demo, if memory serves.

Best I know, the levels you played through were completely original.
It was still kinda short, but if nothing else, it really does get you prepared for the game.

Anyone who complains about Portal: First Slice, just remember that you're already playing about 1/4th of the game in that demo alone ;).

1/4?!?!?!? That was only 10 levels! (I guess the later ones get super hard?)

Portal can be completed in 2 hours (current speed run record is under 1 hour, IIRC), I did it in about 2 1/2 straight through at my best.

There are 19 test chambers, and...
Perhaps I shouldn't spoil it?

Like I said, you play at least a quarter of the game in the demo.

Later chambers are longer/larger/bigger, and do typically indeed take longer to do.
They do indeed get harder, but it can still be done quick enough.

Even more so the second time through.

[edit]
I watched my girlfriend play through it the demo (she's played and beaten the full version before), didn't even realize it was 10 levels. Felt like less, but still 1/4th.

Even having said that, I still stand by my 1/4th claim.
