Important Poll that could change the sound of the station

Postby skie » Sun Feb 26, 2006 11:29 am

Hey all,

First off, as always, thanks for supporting independent radio such as Orange Lounge Radio. We appreciate it.

We're going to be making some changes to the playlist in March, balancing out the other Video Game Music with the Bemani music a little more and just overall trying to give the station a new freshness. All the tracks are going to be re-uploaded and normalized in an effort to make sure the station always has a consistent sound.

However, another thought has occured to us and that is the fact that our station only broadcasts at a 32K bitrate. Part of the reason we did this is so that dial-up listeners could listen to our live program.

Now that we've switched to podcasting, we realize that hypothetically a dial-up user could still download our show (although that will take a bit of patience...) . We're curious if we shouldn't up the bitrate of our stream to 56 or 64K to make our station more alluring to broadband listeners. To put it into comparison, the bitrate we broadcast at now gives us an AM radio sound (unless you have mp3pro then it's more FM)... going up to a higher bitrate would give us almost CD quality sound!

So if we could get your feedback on the following:

1. Do you listen on Broadband or Dial-Up?

2. Do you currently listen to the music stream on OLR or just live shows?

3. If we upped the bitrate of our station would you (if yes above) continue to listen to the music stream? (if no above) give the music stream a try?

Anything else you want to contribute on this topic is most welcomed. Thanks :D

1. BB
2. Yes, ususally 1-3 hours on Sundays
3. Yes I'd probably listen to the music stream more often...especially if you incorporated game soundtracks into the bemani mix.

1. Broadband

2. While I'd like to listen to the live stream, I put priority to the Live shows

3. I'd really like it if you would upgrade your stream, as I like the music on the stream but can find so much better quality on other stations, so yes

You can't imagine how weird it was to hear a mp3PRO-like clip of the live show, it was like you put a loose plug from your mic fully into an input, it's THAT different.

1. Broadband
2. Usually about 1-4 hours on Sunday Nights, depending on commitments,
3. Id probably listen more often than I do currently, depending on if I have any commitments.

If you up the bitrate to approx. 64kbps, frankly it is listen-able for talk radio, however in the eailer recordings (before the new format) music has always been an issue for me, now for the stream in general it is different, I am sure you could get more broadband users if you bumped the bw to 64kbps sure it would get more bb users, however the way I see it (as the live show) you would be kind of leaving the people still on Dial-up out.

I am sure because of the Podcasts your going to get some dial-up people that think "I want to listen live, but i dont know if my connection can handle it." And that is a disadvantage especially for dial-up users that cant switch in a timely manner (because for example they live in a rual area, where dialup is the only cost efficent way to get Internet.) I know that was the case with me in the summertime (June-August, 2005) where I lived in a very rual area which was in the middle of nowhere (the closest town was about 15 miles away if you want an idea) where Dialup was the only option for Internet, and phone service was terrible (28.8k speed at most.)

1. Broadband

2. I would imagine that I would just listen to the live show when i get the chance, not the music.

3.I will give the music stream a try eventually, but right now i just want to catch a live show.

Hope I was of help!

1) Broadband

2) No, Just live-shows via podcast

3) No, I have in the past, it's not my thing(I don't like the short game-versions of songs and most of the non-game music like Gorillaz does not interest me). Quality had nothing to do with my decision

Used to be dialup, but since have moved to broadband/highspeed :P

2. Do you currently listen to the music stream on OLR or just live shows?

Admittedly not as much as I used to... I guess I just miss the old days, LOL. :P

3. If we upped the bitrate of our station would you (if yes above) continue to listen to the music stream? (if no above) give the music stream a try?

Oh definetly I'd like to hear what it sounds like.
