Cho Ren Sha 68K

Cho Ren Sha 68K
Developer: Famibe No Yosshin

Genre: Vertically scrolling shooter
1 Player

For my second installment of Indie Spotlight, I thought I'd go with a game that would be more of a 'pick up and play' title that requires less of a time commitment than my last entry. Hit the jump to read about this fun little shooter.

When the term 'Shoot em up' is brought up, what games come to mind? Truston? 1942? Raiden? All great shooters. But a Japanese developer Famibe no Yosshin has released a PC port of a Japanese X68000 game (home to some great arcade ports, like Final Fight, Super Street Fighter II, and even Castlevania/Akumajo Dracula) called Cho Ren Sha 68K.

While the game is a pretty standard shootemup in the vein of games like Raiden and Truxton, it's still an enjoyable one. Fly your ship through various space-themed levels, shooting down enemies and collecting powerups on you way to each level's sinister boss, such as extra weapon powerups, bombs, or a shield to protect your ship from enemy fire (And believe me, you're going to need it!)

Visually, the game looks pretty good, the graphics are on par with most 16-bit systems like the SNES/SFC, the Genesis/Megadrive, or the TG16/PC Engine. The audio is also rockin' with a techno soundtrack which has a distinctly SEGA Genesis/MD sound to it, it's awesome.

The game can certianly get difficult at times, but that's how it was back in the day... no cheat codes, no GameFAQs, no nothing... just you and your wits against a never-ending armada of alien forces. Luckily you have unlimited continues, but you'll start at the beginning of the last level you were on with a reset score, so you should really try and complete the game on one credit, if you can!

Overall, if you're a fan of the genre, Cho Ren Sha 68K is defintely worth the free download!

One last word of warning, if you have a gamepad (or heck, an arcade joystick) I highly recommend using it for this game, your fingers will thank you!

Download the game here, and the soundtrack here!

PS. Did you know? The high score table actually uses classic arcade shootemup names!
